Review
"If I had to choose a single book to share with a faculty member about how to design and teach an online or blended course, or with an instructional designer partnering with that faculty member, that book would be Essentials of Online Course Design: A Standards-Based Guide, Second Edition. In this concise, clear, and well-written volume, Marjorie Vai and Kristen Sosulski provide a methodology for online and blended course design that is informed by learning theory and seasoned by practical experience. This is the standard reference guide that those of us involved in online and blended learning will be keeping close at hand." Joshua Kim, Ph.D., Director of Digital Learning Initiatives, Dartmouth Center for the Advancement of Learning (DCAL), Dartmouth College, USA, and Blogger for Inside Higher Ed - Technology and Learning

This book is a good introduction to developing online courses, especially for adult learners/ students/ participants. The content below includes my interpretation of the book's chapters and key ideas. It is my intent that the review kindles your interest and spurs you on to buy the book.Chapter 1. Orientation to Online Teaching and LearningThis chapter introduces readers to online learning, with an emphasis on asynchronous delivery. One key difference between classroom and online delivery is that online tends to require much more up-front preparation.Chapter 2. Elements of an Online Course: A TourThis section examines learning management systems (LMS).Chapter 3. Language and Writing StyleThis chapter highlights the importance of clear, conversational-style writing when developing online courses.Chapter 4. Visual Design BasicsThis section highlights the importance of clear visual design when developing online courses. The authors warn course designers to break up long blocks of text. This section would have benefited from the inclusion of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines for ensuring readability.Chapter 5. Engaging the Online LearnerThis chapter covers how to increase interaction between instructor and learners. This chapter was full of adjectives, such as online learning should be active, authentic, collaborative, reflective, etc. My expectation was that the book would give guidance on what to do, not provide a list of adjectives. I would have preferred discussing solid industry examples and what makes each one work.Chapter 6. Activities and ToolsThis section discusses various activities and tools available to developers. The chapter had several different activities, and could have been improved by giving guidance as to which to use when (types of courses, geographies, etc.) and lessons learned in industry. Also, many of the activities mentioned are labor-intensive for the instructor and would be impractical for all but the smallest cohorts.Chapter 7. Resources that EngageThis chapter discusses various engagement resources. The chapter would have been improved by comparing good vs. not-good examples of items to use in courses.Chapter 8. Assessment and FeedbackThis section emphasizes that assessment should be tied to the learning objectives of the course, and the importance of grading class participation.Chapter 9. Building the Course FoundationThis chapter covers the importance of learning outcomes and gives an outline for an online course syllabus. One useful tip was providing a short video reviewing where to find course content on the LMS.Chapter 10. Structuring the Course ContentThis section gives guidelines on how to design course content, such as chunking up material and using images and multimedia to increase engagement. The authors warn online course developers to "check for technical operation" of the course, but when I went on the book's accompanying website, about 30% of the links were broken. I gave the authors the benefit of the doubt, assuming that the errors were meant to be illustrative.Appendix A: Writing Learning OutcomesThe first appendix tells how to develop clear learner-based course outcomes.Appendix B: Using the Standards ChecklistThe second appendix lists the standards used by the authors in checklist format.Overall, I found the book interesting with useful elements I can use in my instructional roles. While I appreciated the extra resources the book's accompanying website provided, I found myself having to flip back and forth between the book and the website to understand the content, which proved annoying after a while. Recommended for instructors new to online learning.
This was a very well-done book and was incredibly helpful for me to read as a course designer. It was encouraging to see that our company was already doing a vast majority of essential best practices, but also a great reminder of what the research says about online learning and how we can improve.I really loved how the book “walked the walk.†As a resource for instructional design, it was incredibly well laid out, with extreme detail given to font, white space, headings, consistency, and organization. This was intentional by the authors... how can they teach great design without a well-designed book?Great resource overall.
I'm currently an EdD student in an educational technology leadership program. Among other things, I study the theories behind the advice that Vai gives in this text. I have a high level of interest in those theories, and I'm aware of the difficulties that can arrive from clumsy and misguided attempts to apply theory to practice. However, most educators teaching online classes are just not that interested in instructional design or multimedia theory. Most of them want to design a functional class so that they and their students can focus on achieving their course objectives. This book is good for both educators and those who handle technology policy. Vai's text is successful because it focuses on the practical but supports her clear advice with theory where necessary. All educational technologists that work directly with faculty should aim for the same sweet spot.
This book is awesome! It helped me tremendously with my Learning Design classes. The authors provide plenty of great explanations and examples. Online resources are also included to support your learning away from the book. With the help of this book, I successfully designed a well-organized Learning Management System. This is a great investment!!!
This book provides thorough yet succinct coverage of online class design and implementation. Authors Vai and Sosulski have distilled the material under study and presented only what is essential thereby accomplishing what instructors who meet with students face-to-face as well as instructors who deliver their instruction online should strive to do. The third and fourth chapters promote clear concise writing and visually appealing, uncluttered page layout. One of the exemplary lessons shows how the instructor breaks up or chunks a lesson into a series of sections: students read; examine pictures; reflect upon the content provided and complete a small project. Students will retain this lesson because they have an opportunity to apply the new information right away and yet they are not given too much content to wade through. People enrolled in online classes are often highly motivated but struggling with time constraints so a well-organized lesson that can be completed in one sitting is probably most beneficial for them."Essentials of Online Course Design: A Standards-Based Guide" also addresses online course standards, assessment, creating course objectives, student engagement and course technology. This book is a fraction of the size of comparable "how to design/implement an online course" books so reading the entire book when you need to design/implement an online course is practical and will give you the satisfaction of knowing that you have received the full import of this highly recommended guidebook.
